Designing Your Badge with Metallic Ink
When designing a badge with metallic ink, you will start with our normal process - design the badge shell and include the colors where you will want to have metallic ink.
For reference: Metallic Badge Design Infography.pdf
1. In Illustrator or InDesign, create a 4x6" or 4x3" formatted design (if you are doing a double-sided design, ensure page 1 is the front and page 2 is the back of the badge).
2. Complete your badge shell design on layer 1
This must be done with vector art.
Use high resolution images to ensure quality print.
Leave enough white space on the front of the badge for the onsite attendee data to be printed onsite.
3. Once you have completed the design layer, it's time to create the metallic layer. Place all of your metallic ink vector art on its own layer and name this layer "Silver".
Avoid the white space where the attendee data will be printed.
Metallic ink works best with lighter colors.
4. In the Swatches Panel, create a new Swatch Fill Color and name it "Silver".
5. In the Color Type dropdown, select "Spot Color".
6. Apply this swatch to everything on the Silver layer (metallic layer).
7. If you created a design for the back of the badge, repeat steps 3-6 again on the back of the badge design (page 2).
Submitting Your Design
1. Once you have created the Badge Shell Design (Layer 1) and the Metallic Ink Design (Silver Layer 2), it's time to save your file.
The badge shell design must be in a PDF Print Ready File
Design must be formatted to the size of the badge (4x6" or 4x3"), not full page (8.5x11")
The front of the badge design must be on page 1 and the back of the design (if applicable) on page 2 and submitted in 1 file.
The front and back cannot be on the same page in the PDF or sent in 2 separate files.
Crop and bleed marks must be included
If the badge design is full bleed (goes all the way to the edge of the badge), it must extend 1/8" past the edge of the badge (4.125" x 6.125" OR 4.125" x 3.125") to ensure a true full bleed and no white space when printed.
2. Once you have saved your design in the proper format, email the design to your Specialist for approval and to send to print.
